Our Mission

The mission of the River Ridge Environmental Education Program is to bring the outside world alive to people of all ages. River Ridge staff members are dedicated to teaching students more about themselves and the world in which they live. Our approach is highly interactive and activity based, so learning is primarily experiential.

A glimpse over the "Ridge"....

Imagine rolling hills just off the banks of the Tennessee River where the sound of children’s voices and laughter echo through the woods and over the water. You can see children learning their first paddling strokes in aluminum canoes on the cove or watch them use primitive tools as Native Americans would have during prehistoric times. If you listen carefully, you might hear students being encouraged by their teammates after their challenging journey on a high ropes element. Nature is at their finger tips. They can touch, see, feel, smell and sometimes taste it. This is no illusion; this is an everyday reality at River Ridge. Experiencing nature close up and creating a lasting appreciation of nature is our goal for every child at River Ridge.

In 1994 River Ridge began as a vision to bring the outside world alive to people of all ages. Kim Bailey, the founder and first director of River Ridge, chose an experiential approach to education. This method allows River Ridge participants to incorporate all five senses in their learning experience. Whether it’s capturing aquatic animals in the lake, identifying trees, taking hikes in the woods, learning basic survival skills or having the confidence to jump out of a tree to slide down the Zip Line, students and chaperones experience nature first hand each and every day. River Ridge classes help promote a strong sense of compassion, responsibility, respect and stewardship to the world around us. Our program offers over 30 unique classes which focus on science, team building, cultural history or outdoor recreation. Teachers love our program because we provide practical applications for principles and information covered in the classroom to help students be ready for TCAP testing. Parents and administrators value our emphasis on safety, structure and supervision in every aspect of our program. River Ridge hosts approximately 7,000 participants each year from across the southeast including Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

River Ridge is a program of the John Knox Center located on Watts Bar Lake, about 10 miles south of Kingston, TN. Our facility is owned and operated by the Presbytery of East Tennessee and is accredited by the American Camp Association.
