LETTER TO THE STUDENTS!
Dear Students,
Imagine a science class where you hike through the woods to discover fungi, wildflowers and salamanders, net aquatic organisms from the lake or make a sheet of recycled paper. Think of a P.E. class where you and a friend practice canoe stokes on a lake surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains. Or, picture your group taking on an exciting and challenging ropes course to learn about the value of teamwork. Imagine a social studies class where you learn about pioneer life hundreds of years ago by using old tools, dipping a candle, making rope or churning butter. What about a math class where you learn how a compass works and then attempt to find your way through the woods in order to test your skills?
This probably doesn’t sound much like a day of school but that’s just what it is at the River Ridge Environmental Education Program! And soon, you and your classmates, along with your teachers and some chaperones, will have an opportunity to spend some time at our center on Watts Bar Lake. While you’re here, you’ll take some of the most fun and fascinating classes imaginable and still have time to be with your friends, play games and participate in other recreational activities like basketball or ping pong.
You’ll also meet some new friends here - your instructors! They will take you on adventures all over our forests, fields, streams and trails. You’ll see, do and learn things you never have before! We hope you’ll learn things about the environment that are so interesting, you’ll want to share them with your friends and family back home.
At River Ridge we will all be a part of a community - a group of people living and working together. You will be in classes and cabins with other students and adults from your school. A big responsibility for you will be to cooperate with the members of your community. You will need to help your group by first thinking of “We” instead of “Me.”
We have certain expectations of you when you visit our center. One is that you follow all school and program rules. Another is that you respect yourself, others and the environment. Finally, we expect you to participate in all the classes and activities. If you do all these things, you’ll be following another important rule - have fun!
Your teacher has all the details about what to bring and everything else you need to know about the trip. When you come, remember to bring your curiosity, enthusiasm and imagination! At River Ridge we’re all looking forward to your visit. See you soon!
